Kozhi Pidi (Malabar Special Curried Chicken and Dumplings)
Kozhi Pidi is a special Malabar dish, that is prepared on occasions, like for the new groom, soon after the wedding, or special guests. It is also cooked by cooking enthusiasts whenever they are in the mood for something special. The process may seem daunting to some, as you have several stages, and you have to make the small rice flour dumplings by hand, and it takes some time.
So basically, this is a delicious coconut-chicken curry served over cooked rice flour dumplings. Mostly the dumplings are small circular-indented coin shapes. For this reason, in several places, it is also called Anna Pathiri. An ‘anna’ was the currency unit (coin), formerly used in British India, equal to 1⁄16 of a Rupee.
There are several other names, for this type of preparation: ‘Kunji Pathiri’ or ‘Kunji Pathil‘ , ‘Kakkaroti’,’KunjOrotti’ ‘Erachi Kodumpu, ‘Thakkadi’, ‘Chakkoli’… and more. I really can’t think of another dish with so many different names.
The name, as well as the cooking style, varies from region to region and from household to household. The preparation of the chicken – coconut curry, may be different. Also, the preparation of the rice dumplings may be different. Also, the way in which they are shaped. In some places, they are shaped like tiny balls, and peanut-shaped (like in my moms Kozhi Pidi).
Whatever the shape or preparation, this is a dish that everyone that knows about it, enjoys it and appreciates, the effort put into it and the charm of the delicious curry.
It is a meal in itself, can be served at any time of the day. There are other versions with Mutton (My older recipe for Mutton Pid / Ana Pathiri ) or even Shrimp. So here, I am sharing my favourite recipe for making Kozhi Pidi.
A few notes before your start:
- Start the Pidi making (dumpling making) process when the chicken curry is being prepared.
- Use only the freshest chicken for this preparation, or all efforts will be lost.
